合気の起源：日本人にしろ、外国人ににしろ、白滝と言う北海道の田舎町を知っている人は少ないと思う。白滝、植芝盛平が武田惣角に習った場所で今年7月に無 傳塾の合宿が行われた。札幌から離れ、山に囲まれて、皆と一緒に稽古するのは珍しい機会だった。塾外の方と稽古する機会もあった。無傳塾の大学生とも久し ぶりに稽古して、上手くなっていると思った。若い人達がずっと続けるといいと思った。

ある意味で、合気は木を育てることと似ていると考える。最初弱いけど、環境が良ければ自然に強くなる。もしかして“合気の苗”も重要かな！来年の3月にイ ギリスに帰るとしても、僕の妻と8月生まれの杏奈を連れて、新たな生活を初めてからも稽古を続けたいと思う。日本で初段を取れればいいと思うが、それはた だの始まりにすぎない。それからどうやって合気を育てて、生活に使えるようにするかが僕の課題。

良いことは、我々は少しずつ世界中にネッワークを広げていること。フィンランドにも行けるし日本にもまた来るし、いつまでもお会いできることを楽しみにしていきたいと思う。

The roots of aiki; probably few people, either in Japan or abroad, would expect then to lie in a smaIl town in Hokkaido−Shirataki. We stayed there for our Gasshuku in JuIy. It was a rare chance to be with the other members in a pIace, surrounded by hills and far from Sapporo. I enjoyed training with people from outside Muden, and with the university students, who are making great progress, and who I really hope will keep training in the future.

In some ways I think developing aiki is like trying to grow a tree. At first it is quite weak, but in the right conditions it will grow naturally. Maybe the seeds of aiki are as important as the rootsl Maybe next March I will return to the UK with my wife and little baby Anna, born in August. We will try to make a new I leave Japan, that will be great. Of course, that really is the beginning-the question is how I continue to grow the aiki and to apply it in my everyday life.

But the good thing is it seems we are collecting a network of friends around the world! We will probably visit Finland and are sure to be back in Japan, and will look forward to seeing our friends in Muden Juku whenever we can!
